It's 1973 when Téresa and Neville marry and immigrate to Toronto from Brazil. Heightened by the reality of being a biracial couple who barely know one another, the pair face common adversities in a new land as Neville masks his dark past with alcohol and affairs while Téresa reconciles the loss of her childhood and her poverty-ridden past . To move forward they must face the demons of their past – all of which are now fronted by their dreams for a white picket fence.
